Throughout the year, we hosted and participated in a series of educational events designed to support patient care, professional collaboration, and ongoing learning within the ophthalmic community. Some of the highlights include:
Led by Dr. Nour Nofal, “Treating the Curve: A Clear View on Keratoconus” was a local event focused on early diagnosis of keratoconus, treatment pathways, and the role of corneal cross-linking (CXL) as an effective management option. The event brought together optometrists from the Hamilton area for an engaging and informative evening, with attendees valuing the clarity of the presentation and the opportunity for meaningful discussion. The positive feedback and strong engagement reinforced the impact of in-person education and laid the groundwork for continued continuing education collaborations in the future.
On June 17, 2025, we hosted a Live LASIK Night for local optometrists, offering an inside look at the full patient journey—from pre-operative testing and consultation to surgery and post-operative care. Attendees had the opportunity to meet Dr. Nour Nofal and observe a live LASIK procedure, gaining firsthand insight into the surgical experience their patients receive. The intimate setting encouraged meaningful discussion and engagement, with participants spending time connecting with the surgical team and gaining a deeper understanding of our collaborative, patient-centered approach to care.
Led by Dr. Shaobo Lei, our team hosted an evening of “Exploring the Latest in Retina Care”. The session introduced Dr. Lei to the optometric community and explored key considerations in retinal care before and after cataract surgery. The interactive presentation encouraged discussion and engagement, with attendees valuing both the clinical insights shared and the opportunity to connect with a retinal specialist through our centre. Strong interest in continued education highlighted the value of ongoing collaboration in our community.
In partnership with the OAO, we hosted the “ICL: Addressing the Unmet Needs in Refractive Surgery” webinar. Led by Dr. Alangh and Dr. Nour Nofal, the session introduced Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) and explored their role within refractive surgery, providing clear, structured insights into patient selection and clinical application. With strong attendance and active participation, the webinar reinforced the value of virtual education in expanding access to emerging surgical options.
On World Sight Day (last Thursday), our Medical Director Dr. Barry Emara was in Windsor, ON for the official launch of Windsor Surgical Centre. Dr. Emara is the lead Ophthalmologist and co-owner of Windsor Surgical Centre with Dr. Fouad Tayfour, chief of ophthalmology at WRH - Windsor Regional Hospital. In partnership with WRH this new state of the art surgical Centre allows for increased access to cataract surgeries and operations to repair retinal detachments. It frees up hospital resources and is on track to double the number of eye surgeries done annually in Windsor. Dr. Emara is proud see the vision for this Centre come to fruition and be able to provide patients with the gift of sight.

Arm yourself with the facts. Decide what is best for you and what makes you feel confident in your decision to proceed with laser vision correction.
Technology, surgeon technique and experience matter. Do your research and ensure you are poised with all the information you need so that you do not compromise your outcome. You only have one set of eyes and you need to fully trust in the technology and techniques embraced by the clinic you choose.
Femtosecond (bladeless) technology delivers far greater precision, predictability and accuracy when creating your LASIK flap. The precise size, shape and depth are critical to a successful surgical outcome.
Femtosecond lasers may decrease the risk of corneal abrasions and induced astigmatism. This technology enables the flap to fit more securely in place reducing healing time and decreasing the risk of flap dislocation.
Leading surgeons worldwide prefer bladeless technology to avoid unnecessary risks when creating a LASIK flap. Bladeless technology allows your surgeon to tailor the corneal flap for each individual patient and eye.
Your most precious gift, your eyes deserve the best! You decide what is right for you!

Laser Vision Correction may be a necessity in your life but unfortunately, some health insurance plans do not agree. However, your employer may have a financing option for you to consider.
Commonly called a flex plan, a Flexible Spending Account is an employer-sponsored benefit that allows you to pay for eligible medical expenses on a pre-tax basis. Contributions made to the account are deducted from your pay before your Federal, State or Social Security taxes are calculated.
If available, you choose the contribution amount. The designated amount is then deducted from your pay in equal installments throughout the year and placed into the account by the employer. Once your claim is submitted, you can collect your reimbursement cheque.
Check with your employer to determine whether you can access this opportunity.

My name is Mark, I had my eyes fixed by you guys about a year and a half ago, and I just wanted to express my sincerest thanks to you guys; my vision is 20/10 (better than 20/20) according to my eye doctor, and I couldn’t be happier with how well it turned out. The procedure was done by Dr. Machat, who was described to me as a "wizard" of laser eye surgery, and I couldn’t agree more with that description.
Anyway I should have thanked you earlier, but kept forgetting. Better late than never I suppose. I have recommended you guys to everyone at my work who wears glasses.
If you are able, please give my sincerest thanks to Dr. Machat, and I greatly thank the whole crew you’ve got there. This has changed my life a lot, and all for the better.
- Mark
From the moment I had my first evaluation appointment at the Burlington Laser Eye Centre, I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Machat and his entire staff are incredibly knowledgeable and professional. On the day of my surgery, they went the extra kilometre to make sure I was comfortable throughout the entire procedure - which went very smoothly. To discern between a lump of laundry and a family pet, to read the alarm clock in the middle of the night, and to open my eyes underwater - “little” things have become blessings. The ability to see without corrective aids is an eye opening milestone in my life and I have the Burlington Laser Eye Centre to thank for this.

Excellent preparation. Absolutely top notch staff, professional and caring. I was extremely nervous. The staff fully understood & were very caring and understanding. I felt fully supported by everyone at The BLEC before, during and after my operations. I cannot express how well I see now. Colours are different. I feel I could see to Toronto from Burlington. Having my eyes done was not just an eye operation, it was a gift from god. I thank everyone, all the staff & all the doctors and nurses at BLEC from the bottom of my heart.
